Table Lamp Size Guide: How Tall Should Your Lamp Be?
A beautiful lamp at the wrong size sabotages an otherwise perfect console. Too tall and it looms; too short and it disappears behind a stack of books. Here are the three rules that get it right every time — in both inches and centimetres.
Quick-reference rules
| Rule | The number |
|---|---|
| Lamp height vs the table | No taller than 1.5× the table's height |
| Total height (table + lamp) for seated eye level | 58–64 in / 147–163 cm |
| Typical table lamp height | 24–34 in / 60–86 cm |
| Shade width vs base height | Within about 2 in / 5 cm of each other |
| Shade height vs base | Roughly ⅔ the base height |
The core sizing rules
Rule 1 — the 1.5× table rule. A table lamp should be no more than one-and-a-half times the height of the surface it stands on. On a low side table this means a shorter lamp; on a tall console, a taller one.
Rule 2 — eye level when seated. The bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level when you're seated beside it, so the bulb is hidden and the light falls where you need it, not in your eyes. For most seating, that puts the table-plus-lamp total at 58–64 in (147–163 cm).
Rule 3 — the shade rule of thumb. Shade width should be within about 2 in (5 cm) of the base height, the shade should be about two-thirds the height of the base, and it should never be wider than the table it sits on.
Getting the lampshade proportions right
A correctly sized base with the wrong shade still looks off. Keep the shade narrower than the table, tall enough to hide the hardware and bulb, and balanced against the base — a slim base wants a slim shade, a chunky base a fuller one. When in doubt, slightly larger reads more confident than slightly small.
Room by room
- Bedside table — 24–27 in (60–68 cm). The shade bottom near eye level when sitting up in bed, so you can read without glare. A pair, one each side, looks intentional.
- End table / sofa side — 26–34 in (66–86 cm), tuned so the shade sits around eye level when seated.
- Console / entryway — taller is fine here; the lamp is partly a styling object, so let it have presence.
How to measure your space
Measure the table height first, apply the 1.5× rule for a maximum, then sit where you'll actually use the lamp and note your seated eye level. The lamp you want sits where those two meet. Take both numbers when you shop and you'll never guess.
